Colorado third state to achieve 100 Firewise Communities

More than 100 Colorado communities have now earned Firewise Communities/USA recognition – an accomplishment achieved by only three states – for taking steps to reduce their wildfire risk.

“Reaching the one hundred community benchmark is a major accomplishment,” said Cathy Prudhomme, the community outreach program manager for the National Fire Protection Association’s Wildland Fire Operations Division. “Until now, only two of the program’s 41 participating states have achieved that level of participation.”

The national Firewise Communities/USA recognition program is administered by the NFPA and provides a template for wildfire safety at the neighborhood level. The Colorado State Forest Service serves as the liaison between Colorado communities and the NFPA to help private landowners with wildfire mitigation and education efforts ...

Texas Firewise Committee to launch neighborhood program

Lakeway Firewise Committee, the city of Lakeway and Lake Travis Fire Rescue will launch the Lakeway Neighborhood Firewise Program at the meeting.

The new program enables homeowners associations and leaders in neighborhoods without HOAs to educate homeowners about the risks of wildland fires and the need to take personal responsibility, obtain overall Neighborhood Wildland Fire risk assessments and obtain planning and brush removal support for approved Neighborhood/HOA Firewise Fuel Reduction Workdays on common areas and home sites. Conditions ripe for severe wildfire threat in San Diego County

Dry, windy and warm conditions will heighten the risk of wildfire in the inland valleys and mountain areas of San Diego County Wednesday, meteorologists said.

"Winds, along with low relative humidity values and above average temperatures, will enhance the potential for fire ignition and spread during the day," according to the National Weather Service.

Funding allows Humboldt County communities to become Firewise

About $60,000 in funding is up for grabs through the end of the month as part of a project that aims to reduce the risk of wildfires in Humboldt County communities.

The federal grant funds support the Firewise Communities project, according to a county press release. Through the project, communities can become or maintain their status as "recognized Firewise communities."

1,000 more California wildfires than usual in 2014, and fire season just started

The traditional fire season has only just begun, and already in California firefighters have battled at least 1,000 more wildfires than in a typical year.

So far this year, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has sent crews to nearly 5,000 wildfires, which have charred a combined 92,139 acres on non-U.S. Forest Service land, according to a statewide fire activity update issued this week.

In the last week alone, Cal Fire has responded to 167 wildfires that have cropped up ahead of the fall season, which is notorious for strong Santa Ana winds that have fanned destructive fires in Southern California in the past ...
