Nationwide tornadoes contribute to increased wildfire fuel

Wildfires near New York City? One community's fight against a growing problem
In the last 15 years, over 100 brush fires have occurred along the Eastern Shore of Staten Island, off the coast of New York City. The culprit? An invasive grass called Phragmites Australis. This insidious plant is causing increasing problems for firefighters in this and other coastal areas.
