The initiative ties together a number of existing programs, including Firewise and Ready, Set, Go! to help residents, firefighters, land managers and community leaders adapt to living with wildfire. Firewise Mapper provides real-time wildfire information for communities
Thanks to a partnership with global GIS software firm ESRI, NFPA is in the process of developing an interactive Firewise Mapper tool you can access online. Find recognized Firewise Communities/USA® sites on the ‘beta’ presentation version, and learn where wildfires are burning right now. Send us your feedback to help build on current content.

Forecasters predict an active and widespread wildfire season
Prolonged drought, excess wildfire fuels and high winds are major contributors to increased wildfire risk for communities across the country. Many more states may soon be going on high alert as forecasters warn of the potential for significant and widespread fire events during this wildfire season.

Study concludes wildfires in southwestern U.S. are unprecedented
After analyzing 1,500 years of climate and fire patterns using tree-ring data and hundreds of years of fire-scar records gathered from Ponderosa Pine forests, authors of a recent study conclude that today's mega forest fires in the southwest are unparalleled to anything we've seen in recent history.

Firewise communities recognized for 10 years of wildfire safety participation
NFPA's Firewise Communities/USA® Recognition Program honors 20 official Firewise communities from 11 states who celebrate their 10-year anniversary of continued participation and success in reducing wildfire risks. First recognized in 2003, the communities were among the earliest adopters of the Firewise Communities/USA process.

Firewise documents $100 million in grant funding and volunteer hours
Since formally recognizing communities 11 years ago, the Firewise Communities/USA® Recognition Program has documented the value of local wildfire mitigation activities at more than $100 million. Investments include grant funding and volunteer hours, and demonstrate how communities are participating in actions that directly reduce their wildfire risk. |

Western Lands & Communities webinar to feature Firewise concepts
Join Michele Steinberg and other presenters on June 27 for the web-based presentation, “Managing the Impacts of Fires.” Sponsored by the Sonoran Institute and Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, participants will have access to resources and learn more about wildland fire safety, education and regulatory approaches to wildfire.
