Lt. Tim Weaver of the Rapid City, South Dakota, Fire Department, shares how you can ignite community action and build trust in wildfire preparedness. This “Ask the Expert” workshop has Lt. Weaver share lessons learned for the homeowner and local agency in Firewise and Fire Adapted Community efforts. He shares his experience in gaining residential trust around wildfire mitigation requests, and his agency work with local officials in developing mitigation solutions.

Courtney Peterson, Wildfire Mitigation Education Coordinator with the Colorado State Forest Service, and Joanne Drummond, Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, CA, will share the value they see in local community action and how volunteer work by communities at risk is making the difference in wildfire preparedness across the nation.

Firewise’s Wildfire Urban Legends Wildfire and home safety myths and beliefs were put to the test by wildfire expert Pat Durland determined true or false to questions we all have, drawing upon his long career as a smoke jumper, wildland firefighter, policy maker, insurance consultant, and wildland fire educator.

What can Firewise Do for You? The Firewise Communities/USA® Program and its resources were explained for participants and practitioners at the state and local level.  Changing fire behavior in the wildland urban interface, why homes burn, how the program engages residents in a valuable dialogue, and the role of the resident in the larger Fire Adapted Communities concept were all addressed in this informative workshop.
