Arkansas Community Stories



Norman, Arkansas is a quiet town of 423, established in 1908. It is nestled in the Ouachita National Forest with the Caddo River meandering through it. Canoeing and fishing are popular pastimes. For golfing enthusiasts, there is the Paradise South Public Golf Course. On the edge of town is the Caddo Indian Memorial Park. Surrounding the Caddo Indian Burial Ground is a quarter-mile nature walk with shaded benches sitting right on the river's edge under the tall pine and oak trees. The Norman Public Library in the town square and the old Norman High School are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Norman Community has been actively involved in the Firewise Program in Montgomery County. The Norman Fire Department has 17 dedicated volunteers with five of them also being medical first responders. They have the largest fire district in Montgomery County, covering 175 square miles. This also includes the town of Black Springs.
