Arkansas Community Stories
The
community of Story is located in the northeastern corner of Montgomery County.
It is a rural community, nestled in the Ouachita National Forest and bordering
the Muddy Creek Wildlife Area. Lake Ouachita lies about three miles south,
and offers good fishing and recreation. The U.S. Corps of Engineers campground
and the Highway 27 Fishing Village and Boat Dock are located a short distance
from Story.
Members of the Story community became aware of the risk of wildfire in 1980. It was during that very dry summer that the homes in the Story area were threatened. One home was destroyed by fire during that time.
When
Story residents were contacted about the Firewise program, they were very
interested in participating. The Sulphur/Laverna Fire Department completed
Firewise assessments for the residents, and found that about forty percent
needed to improve their home ignition zones. The fire department also located
several water souces that would be crucial for suppression purposes should
a wildfire occur.
Story is part of the Montgomery County Firewise Board and has been active in developing plans and projects. Story residents have been encouraged to participate in the Firewise program, either through fuel mitigation or receiving technical assistance.
