Apple Mountain Lake

Apple Mountain LakeApple Mountain Lake is located on a mountainside in Warren County, Virginia, which is part of the Shenandoah Valley. Our community is about 1.5 hours west of Washington, DC.

Apple Mountain Lake is approximately 700 acres in size and is comprised of roughly 680 lots. We currently have around 578 homes and maintain approximately ten miles of roads that are a mix of pavement and gravel. Our community enjoys two lakes and other common properties.

Apple Mountain LakeApple Mountain Lake began implementing Firewise principles in 2005. Our citizens started their work on identified concerns within the community and our projects have been funded through the Virginia Department of Forestry Firewise Mitigation Program.

Due to the narrow, steep roads in Apple Mountain Lake, we have been improving cul-de-sacs for emergency vehicle access and have replaced the dry hydrant at the lake. We have also placed dry hydrant directional signs along the main routes.

Over the past few years, volunteers within the community have worked to reduce the fuel load by removal of brush on their property and cleared road shoulders and overhanging branches to improve firebreaks. Many of our residents have had individual home assessments done to determine if they need to create more defensible space around their homes. Some have placed reflective, highly visible house number signs by their driveways for easier emergency identification.

Apple Mountain lakeApple Mountain Lake Firewise volunteers plan to continue to conduct selected projects that will reduce wildfire risk and improve access to our community in the event of an emergency. We will also continue to work closely with our local fire department and VDOF to achieve our goals and educate our community about wildfire risks.
